Soorah Mulk

السلام عليكم

I started reciting Soorah Mulk when Ummi told me that my grandfather and my uncle both of whom have passed away (May Allaah have mercy upon them) recited every night after magrib. Alhamdulillaah they have memorised the soorah too. I pray that it intercedes for them and that they are protected from the torment of the grave.

One day I started copy writing Soorah Mulk. This way I could easily memorise the whole soorah in few days because I was reciting it every day. Alhamdulillaah.You can also try! You can memorise it by reciting it daily.

'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood said: "Whoever reads 'al-Mulk' every night, Allaah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam), we used to call it al-mani'ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allah, there is a chapter [and] whoever recites it every night has done very well." [Sahih at-Targhib wat-Tarhib, no. 1475]

This Hadith means that on the Day of Resurrection this Surah will intercede with Allaah for the forgiveness of its reciter. (Commentary from Riyad-us-Saliheen)

Maimoonah

Arabic Update!

I have not been able to post an update on our Arabic for this year. Here is a summary of what we are doing and where we are now.

As you know I did not use Glenn Doman's method to teach Arabic reading with Maimoonah as I did for English. Instead I used the Iqra Books and the Word Flow for Arabic. The progress was slow comparing to English reading but Alhamdulillaah eventually we have got there.

So now Maimoonah has completed the Iqra Books and is able to read Arabic. We have started reading the Qur'aan from Soorah Baqarah. She reads three to four aayaahs every day depending on the length of the aayaahs, she reads more or less. The reason we did not start reading from Juzz Amma is because I noticed that she is not putting effort to read as she has already memorised them. So starting off from Soorah Baqarah is working fine.

We also read Easy Arabic Books from the Children's Library. She is still unable to read without Haraqaat though. 

As for Grammar and language we are using the Gateway to Arabic Book 1 and Madeenah Arabic Book 1. She has almost finished the Gate way Book 1. Her writing has improved very much and I still give her to trace to make it better. This book is good for vocabulary too.

As for Madeenah Book 1 I used to make worksheets before but it was time consuming. Alhamdulillaah I found this site (I cannot guarantee the authenticity of the other materials found in this site, so please check before you browse the other stuff) with worksheets for each chapter of the Madeenah Book done by the same author and it really saved time. So now we are using this. She is learning grammar, writing, and vocabulary with these worksheets. Now we have completed about 5 lessons with all worksheets and continuing. It is slow but I really do not mind as long as she gets to understand fully.

 

 

She also listens to other Arab kids and tries to use their dialect and talk very little at times.

Is memorising the Quran 1st or Seeking knowledge?

Should the student of knowledge start with memorising the Quran?

What should the student of knowledge begin with, studying the aqeedah and the tawheed which is part of the Eeman? Or memorising the Quran

As it was reported that it was from the way of the companions and the sunnah to teach the children the tawheed before the Quran and not the contrary as it is widely spread amongst people.

Jundub Ibn Junada may Allah be pleased with him said:

We were with the prophet sala Allahu alayhi wa salam while we were young boys, so we learned faith (eeman) before the Qur’an, then we learned the Quran and our eeman increased.

Reported by Ibn Majah and authentified by Al Albani.

And on the authority of Abd Allah Ibn Umar may Allah be pleased with them, He said:

We lived during an instant of time in which one of us would receive Faith first before receiving the Qur’an and when the verses were revealed we would learn what they permitted and what they prohibited and what they forbade and what they ordered and what should be the stance towards them. But I have seen many men from whom one is given the Qur’an before Faith and he reads it from the opening of the Book to its closing and he does not know what it orders and what it forbids and what should be his stance towards it. He is like someone who is just throwing out dates, i.e.: he does not get any benefit from his recital.

Reported by Al Bayhaqi and Al Haakim who authentified it.

Ibn Al-Qayyim said:

If they reach the time of pronouncing, let them pronounce La Ilah ila Allah Mohammed Rassoul Allah, and that the first thing that knocks their ears, knowing Allah Glory be He, His Tawheed and He (Glory be He) is above His throne, and that He sees them and that He hears their words and that He is with them wherever they are…

Shaykh Muhammed Ibn Abdul Wahab had written a letter named “Teaching the children Tawheed”, he says in his introduction:

This letter is a benefit showing what obligations to teach the children before teaching them the Qur’an. So that the child becomes a complete individual upon the islamic fitrah under tawheed correctly.

As it was asked also:

Do we start learning what is mandatory from the knowledge of the prayer, the fasting and the purification? Or do we start with memorising the Quran?

Ibn Mubarak answered to that:

If you have what is sufficient for you from the Quran to perform your prayer then seek knowledge.

I say because seeking knowledge of the deen is mandatory and memorising the Quran is recommended, so you do not precede the recommended over the mandatory.

Qur'aan and Hifdhl Progress!

Now that Maimoonah is 5 years old the methodology and ways of her memorising the Qur'aan has changed. And Alhamdulillaah it has taken a good turning point and most of the time is spent on Qur'aan.


She uses the ipod for memorisation. We have downloaded the Qur'aan Majeed Apps for her. It has many features for memorization, like different Qaaris, repeating soorah or aayah, book marks for soorahs, translation of the meaning of the Qur'aan Aayah by Aayah.


I have also printed out little cards that sis Fehmida did for me which is also now available here for downloading. (so far you will get only the soorahs for Juzz Amma) This is mainly for revision.

So this is how it goes.

• Qur'aan/Hifdhl is part of our school Time Table, so it has one work-box.
• Each day I place about 4 or 5 cards with old soorahs for revision and the card with the new soorah in the work-box.
• She will listen to the soorahs for the day and when she is ready, she will call me to check her memorization of the old soorahs.
• She must listen to the new soorah 5 times during this session.
• When she starts a new soorah, first I will recite to her and then she will listen to the Qaari.
• Then we read the Tafseer of that Soorah.
• After few days she would tell me now she has memorised the new soorah and she is ready to be checked. 
• I check her memorization and if it satisfactory I stick the sticker on the Hifdhl Shelf.
• This whole process takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour every day or sometimes more.
• Except for reading the Tafseer and checking, the rest is done independently by her.
• Later in the evenings after we finish school, she will listen to all the soorahs she has memorised while she is busy with playing, or some days she would listen and recite with the Qaari while she in engaged with her own work.
• Also sometimes while she is listening to the soorahs she would read the translation while the aayahs are being recited. This way she has learnt the meaning of many Arabic words and when she recites she knows what she is reciting. This has become a great plus point with the Mercy of Allaah. Every now and then she would talk about an Aayah and tell me the meaning and will start asking questions about it which will lead to a fruitful discussion.

This is how it is going so far and one thing to always keep in mind is that with age and maturity things change, and if you had read my previous posts of Qur'aan you will know the stages and phases Maimoonah went through with this journey, where she used to have melt downs as well as losing self confidence to recite and memorise, and I had to stop Qur'aan completely with her for about 6 months fearing that she would start hating the book of Allaah, Allaah forbid.

And this is something that happens to other kids too as many sisters have written to me with regard to this and asked advise. Each child is unique and forcing anything onto them is going to be disaster, especially the book of Allaah. We need to handle each child accordingly and our goal should be to make the child love the Book of Allaah. Memorising the Qur'aan in the early ages is the best but we got to be careful as to how we are doing this without stressing the child. 

Lots and lots of Duas are the main key to success Inshaa Allaah. And then when a child listens to the audio again and again the memorisation comes easily and effectively without any stress Inshaa Allaah. 

I ask Allaah to make this task easy for all of us and make our children love His Book and act upon it till the end. Aameen.
