Sewing Saturdays - Felt and Embroidery Wall Hanger

السلام عليكم

At my Tarbiyah class, I was told to do a project including all what we have studied in sewing for few weeks.

We had to include the following stitches

• Cross stitch.
• Blanket stitch,
• Running stitch,
• Back stitch
• Whip stitch.
• French knot
• Split stitch
• Chain stitch
• Satin stitch
• Buttons

And include the following:

• A tree
• A House with at least one window and door
• flowers
• hills or roads or grass
• leaves

First we cut the pieces and made a scenery. Then we stuck them on the material. Next we sewed them. For the house I used blanket stitch, for the path I used the split stitch, the cherry tree is in whip stitch,

The grass chain stitch, the leaves were filled with satin stitch, We did cross stitch for the cloud and the buttons, back stitch for the flowers, french knot for more flowers, running stitch for the sun, and the mountains. We did a pond, but it was stuck, instead of being sewn.

Maimoonah

Tarbiyah Girls Club - Class 10

At the 10th Tarbiyah Class we learnt the meaning of Inqiyaad - Compliance with Allaah with Obedience, part of Knowing Your Religion. This included the discussion of newly invented matters in the dheen of Allaah and sticking to the sunnah of the messenger of Allaah. We also learnt the conditions of an action to be accepted by Allaah with examples. 

We also explained the incident of Ibn Masood and the people who were counting pebbles and making dhikr. This was a nice incident to talk about with the girls and make them understand many innovated matters in this pure dheen. Alhamdulillaah!

We continued with Adab Al Mufrad on the topic "Repaying Parents". We learnt the wonderful manners of Abu Huraryrah radhiyallaahu anhu with his mother and the statement of Ibn Umar with regard to repaying one's mother even if someone carries her and made tawaaf when she was old. We spoke about the pain that a mother goes through when she gives birth and how we should be dutiful to her at all times.

This time the kids did bookmarks. We got inspired by this link. And the kids were happy with their work.

Tarbiyah Girls Club - Class 9

At the 9th Tarbiyah Class we moved on with Al Waajibaat. We learnt the detail meaning of Istislaam with Tawheed. This part of the study involved talking about the Ghurabaah - The Strangers. We discussed about the hadeeth of the Ghurabaah and the girls were pretty much curious on the Strangers. We also discussed how they can be strangers in different situations that they have to experience. 

As for Taharaah we went through the 10th Hadeeth of Umdatul Ahkaam, Book of Taharaah which talks about "Ghurran Muhajjaleen" and the reward of wudoo. We discussed about the issue of lengthening the marks of the limbs of wudoo and spoke about the differences of opinions with regard to this issue.

We started Aaysha bint Abu Bakr in Great women of Islaam. Since her biography is a bit longer we had to do it for few weeks and may be we will continue in Level 2 of the course as well Inshaa Allaah. We read her early upbringing and few incidents that had happened during her childhood.

This week the girls tried finger knitting and thoroughly enjoyed it. 

Tarbiyah Girls Club - Class 8

At the 8th Tarbiyah Class we started off with the second principle "What is your Religion" in al Waajibaat. Alhamdulillaah we have covered "Who is your Lord" completely.

The girls were taught the meanings of each words used in describing what is your religion.

As for Taharaah we continued with the next hadeeth on starting to do things from the right side. We learnt about Aayshaa radhiyallaahu anha being the most knowledgeable of the people with regard to  the affairs of the Prophet and why that was the case. And the girls learnt when we should start certain thing with the left and why.

We continued with Adab Al Mufrad and learnt about Kind Words to Parents. We also briefly touched on "Khawaarij" as the Athar included this. And we spoke about how we must not refuse anything what our parents love and just kind words to parents can take you to Jannah as long as you do not commit major sins. 

This week we did a button art project with the girls. The Girls learnt how to sew buttons. and they were shown this and asked to do their own.

The girls enjoyed and some completed. Their work can be seen below!

Sewing Saturdays - Making a Doll

We are not too regular with Sewing Saturdays, since we also do the Tarbiyah Classes every other Saturdays. Any way sometime back Maimoonah made this Smart Ark Doll which I got for her and kept 2 years ago.

This Easy Sew Doll kit comes with everything you need to sew a cute soft toy doll with a Hijaab, such as needle and thread, poly stuffing, pair of scissors and printed doll fabric. 

This was an ideal project for Maimoonah to revise her stitches. She used back stitch as instructed. 

 

 And this is the finished doll.

 

This is suitable for a very independant project for 6 and up and a fun way to keep them occupied while learning some skill.

Sewing Saturdays - Outline Stitch

So after a very long break we got back to sewing on Saturdays, Alhamdulillaah!

Now that Maimoonah has grown and has developed better controlling skills stitching is pretty much independent and she is liking it more as well.

Just to get the rhythm back I thought of introducing an easy stitch and settled for Outline Stitch.

We use this and learnt how to stitch the Outline Stitch.

We used this stencil and drew the scene on a felt material.

Then got on with stitching the outline. Then she stitched two buttons revising our lesson on stitching buttons. This is how it looks after completing. I helped only with threading the needle and the finishing knots, the rest pretty much her own work.

Its displayed on the Refrigerator!

Sewing Saturdays - Felt Book Mark!

Maimoonah has been begging that she needs to sew again. life had been so hectic that Sewing Saturdays was almost forgotten. Today she insisted that she needs to sew and I too wanted to get back to our normal activities and make things interesting for her.

So she made a Felt Book Mark today. Maashaa Allaah she is able to concentrate more and stitch well now. Her motor skills have improved and she needed very little help to do this.

She used the stencil and drew a lemon on the felt. I cut two pieces.

We pinned the pieces of felt with a long ribbon underneath them.

Then she stitched around the felt pieces.

She wanted to stitch a button on the middle.

Followed the same steps for the felt pieces at the end of the ribbon.


And here is the final product. She was very proud of her work! And uses it for the books she reads every day! A very simple and easy project. Originally the idea was taken from here

Sewing Saturdays - Needle Book!

Alhamdulillaah, a dear sister and her kids from another part of the world sent Maimoonah a whole heap of sewing stuff. May Allaah reward them immensely for their generosity and kind gesture. Aameen. In fact the sister sent us all the materials we were looking for for various projects we wanted to do. You know who you are sister, please note that you and your kids have indeed brighten up our journey! And all this means so much for us. Love all of you for the sake of Allaah!

So now that we got the much needed felt materiel, we resumed our Sewing activity this Saturday. We chose to make a Needle Book to keep all the needles in tact. We got the instructions from here.

So Maimoonah chose the colours for this Project. Taught her how to measure and mark the size on the materiel. Then I cut and these are the two pieces of the felt material we would use for the Book.

 

We took a piece of ribbon kept it on top of one piece and kept the other piece of the felt materiel over it and pinned.

 

Then we used blanket stitch and stitched all the edges. I did two sides and Maimoonah did the remaining two sides.

Then the dear sister also sent us beautiful buttons. Maimoonah chose one of them and stitched here. Now the she already knew how to stitch buttons, she was pretty confident to do it.


Then we pinned all our needles and this is our final product!

Sewing Saturdays - Finger Knitting!

Alhamdulillaah taking the advise our dear sister Umm Tafari we attempted finger knitting. Jazzakillaah Khayr sis Umm Tafari for the concern and timely suggestion it was a such a beautiful experience and we loved it masha Allaah!

I helped Maimoonah first to do it and eventually she caught it even though she still needed help. But she did well, in fact her one was very much nicer and neater than mine : )

We did not have any proper yarn as usual, just had some thread we use to hang things up and we used it for the moment!

So first we watched this video and Maimoonah started finger knitting!

Then I attempted finger knitting and it ended up like this.

Watched this You tube and made the flower. Stitching was an issue I guess because the yarn was very soft! But managed to do something: )

So that was how it all went. Time to get more knitting stuff now and explore Insha Allaah!
