Continents - Australia

Continuing our study on Continents and Nations this week we finished Australia.

Alhamdulillaah, now Maimoonah does not get confused with the Continents : ) So we read the Atlas and all about Australia and New Zealand. We learnt a few facts about Australia along with reading about the Native people of this Continent.

  • Australia is the smallest continent
  • Australia has the many of the poisonous animals found in the world
  • Koalas are the only animal who could eat from the Australian gum trees.
  • Kangaroos can survive without water for months
  • New Zealand is known for many of the water sports.
  • Beef and diary products mostly come from Australia and New Zealand. Etc etc
Then we chose three countries, Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea (some books say that Papua New Guinea does not belong to the continent Australia and some places said it does, any way I just included this as well as I explained to her they are known as Pacific Islands, Allaah knows best)

She used the World Fact Book and filled in all the details. Also she filled the details here.

Masha Allaah by doing this she has improved her spelling so much. I did not know she could spell everything to write on her own without looking at the book. I think this kind of learning is much better than sitting and dictating to write some dictation words. I tried this once but I knew she was learning much more buy doing her regular activities and gave up having spelling lessons : )

She pinned the flag for  Australia on her Wooden map!

Then she got all interested in Kangaroos. She wanted to know more. We went onto the net and found some facts about the Kangaroos and she chose some facts and wanted to write a small note on Kangaroos. Masha Allaah again very much independently. (She saw "Kangaroo Shop" written on a web page and insisted she wants to write that too, so I said ok : )

Then we used this template and did dot painting a Kangaroo. I showed her and she played around with paints.

Insha Allaah one more to go on Continents and we are done with it for this year.

Mashaa'Allaah! Maimoonah is doing such lovely work!!!!

Baraka'Allaahu'Feekum for sharing :)

Where do you get your materials from? Not the documents you use- but the other materials like the flags and such?

Alaikum salaam Umm Suhailah, wa feekum Barakallaah!
The wooden world map and the flags, I got it at a local stationery store here which sells plenty of Chinese stuff for a reasonable cheap price. Actually I had brought it and kept a year ago and it came handy now. When I see something useful I buy and keep if it is affordable and worth it. I do not go shopping when I need lol! Just try to use what is around. We do not buy lot of toys for Maimoonah except for her kitchen stuff and few cars, all what she has is educational stuff. So I keep looking for these whenever I go out : )

Nice job mashaAllah, she must be enjoying learning about the continents.

Right now we are learning about landforms and bodies of water and both of the kids are really like what they are learning alhamdulillah. Soon we'll be starting continents and I'm thinking about doing separate lapbooks for each continent and do little extensive study. We can try to locate different landforms and bodies of water within each continent, some of countries, animal habitat, plants, food etc. I want to keep the lapbooks really simple but address the above mentioned areas for each continents. Then they can go back and review the lapbook whenever they can. What do you think? Would it be too much at this level? maybe boring since I'm thinking doing this for each continent ( the layout and style will be somewhat different)?

Yes Umm Sara she is enjoying so far. Yes the lap book is a nice idea. And studying it a bit deeper is good too, but this depends upon the interest and attention span of each child. As for Maimoonah I kept it very basic this year and I thought we would do deeper studies next year going into all what you have mentioned including doing some country or continent report as I feel next year she would be able to do things more independently Insha Allaah!
Also doing it for a long period may bore them I guess, next is Oceans that we got to study but I will not to that next week, instead I will do some other topics and come back to Oceans so that she will not feel bored.
Having said all this I think since you are using a Proper Book also I think its for 1st Grade and it covers all aspects properly before going into other topics and since they have already learnt all of them accordingly it would be a nice idea to very briefly include these, so that it will be more practical for them Insha Allaah! You can start and see how their interests are if they are not you can always keep it for next year Insha Allaah, nothing loss!!! : ) Awaiting to see your activities Insha Allaah!
