Mathematics so far!

We are using the Nelson International Mathematics Books and MEP Year 1 for this year. So far within this 3 weeks we have covered a lot Alhamdulillaah without any stress.

Maimoonah loves the Nelson Maths books and finished Book 1A just in one week and Book 1B is almost done. Of Course the activities are pretty easy for her so far. She likes the illustrations and methods on this book, very very child friendly and she finishes them fast. she has got used to using her timer where she sets the time for 5 or 10 minutes and tries to finish the activities before the timer makes a noise. She really enjoys this and finishes maths pretty fast.

I thought she would feel bored to do MEP after getting used to the Nelson, but Alhamdulillaah now she is doing the MEP all by herself too and she uses the timer for that as well. So everyday we do from both the books.

Now she is able to understand many of the concepts on MEP that she could not fathom last year. I guess age plays a big role in every stage of the development.

So far some new things we have covered are summarised below.

Numbers Ascending and Descending Order

Tens and Units

Pour and Measure
This was a big hit. We used different containers to measure water and recorded. She learnt about ml and litres.

Assalaam Alaykum

MaashaaAllaah very well done . The book one is very similar in concepts and way to the Singapore Maths that we are doing .Almost the same way.Almost towards the end of kumon book on time as well Alhamdulillaah. I too finding timing them to do the work very productive and no time to waste. I think it also gives them a sense of accomplishment that they finished it within the time . MEP yr 1 is going well . We are using unifix cubes. so far alhamdulillah going on well.

Lots of progress on the maths mashAllah! Just reading about the timer is stressing me out...mashAllah for Maimoonah to put herself to the time test in such a away. The nelson books looks great. We are fully booked with maths this year with MEP yr1 plus teh curriculum that I've prepared but it is something that I will look into for the future inshAllah.

Wa Alaikum salaam warahmathullaah Akhawaat,

Umm Abdur Rahmaan, Alhamdulillaah yes little kids like to be big kids sometimes. Nice to know that Singapore Maths is also similar, not had a look at them yet, but I know many use them and find them interesting too. MEP is good for critical thinking and I want to make it a point to follow it as well. Anything additional for maths is nothing loss bi idhnillaah! Glad to know things are going there well too by the Mercy of Allaah! Baarakallaah feekum!

Amatullaah, yeah timer stresses me too, but for Maimoonah it is fun as she is less exposed to stress when it comes to learning Alhamdulillaah! Its just a fun way of doing things and I just overlook : ) Yeah I like Nelson because it covers all in tiny bits of pieces and exposes the child to all topics here and there and I like MEP it goes into detail in one topic until the child masters that topic first and then moves on to the next. So using both at the same time is beneficial I think bi idhnillaah for us. Jazzakillaah Khayr for the motivation and encouragement as usual.

Assalamo alaikum ukhti,

Mashallah! I am curious to know where she got the timer idea from ? I totally agree with using multiple math curriculum as they may fit our children. I actually use 3 Math on the level for the ideology, Math Mammoth for drills and understanding how numbers work and MEP for enrichment and critical thinking as you said.

Hands on activities go a long way, not to mention fond memories :)

Alaikum salaam Umm Umamah

Well she has read somewhere about Record Breakers and asked her father about it and he had explained how people do things faster and break records. This is the challenge she has taken upon herself I guess! lol

Ukhtee, do you follow any curriculum that is a requirement in your state? How do you get about it as kids grow especially the boys?

Assalamu alaykum,

MashaAllah, she has been very busy as usual. Doing so much hands-on, practical things always make learning fun inshaAllah. And, mashaAllah the idea of using timer is so good.

Sister, I meant to ask you about science kit, if you have come across any good/reasonably priced science kit for age group children? or if any of the other sisters here might know? something for 4-8 year olds, containing basics not much complicated tools etc? if so, can you give me the link inshaAllah. JazakAllah khayr

Walaykum assalam Umm Maimoonah,

I actually use a medley of math curriculum as I mentioned in my last comment, but we have found our rhythm with it. There is no compulsory curriculum requirement where I am. So we are happy with what we are doing. My boys really like Math Mammoth as it really makes them understand how numbers work. Whereas Math Mammoth has unleashed my math fears and I have been able to do some really out of the box activities with them. I have hardly posted our Math adventures but you could check out our Fractions posts, there's one even on measurement and fractions with poring water, something like what Maimoonah did...http://umamahlearningacademy.blogspot.ca/#uds-search-results

Barakallaho feeki

Alaikum salaam Umm Sumayya,

Jazzakillaah Khayr for the comment. I got the science kits from www.rainbowresources.com . you can see the products there and they are pretty good and reasonable, and I could get them shipped here too. usually I get together with sisters here and we place a bulk order so that the shipping cost will reduce and I like the stuff and pretty much satisfactory. I got an Electricity Kit, Chemistry Kit, and many more. some of the kits can be used as they grow as well and it is useful. If you need me to send the links of the products I got from them let me know I can mail you Inshaa Allaah.

Umm Umamah, Jazzakillaah khayr, will check out the links.
