Arabic Drilling

Maimoonah is learning to read Arabic and her progress is slow due to many reasons.
She is a visual learner and since she never used phonics to learn to read English she is looking for the same method in reading Arabic as well. and is very quick in reading sight words. But I did not teach her this method when it came to Arabic as I was not confident enough myself.

Any way now I find she gets confused with many rules even though she knows it well. While reading she is slow and gets confused with different forms of letters, the vowels, the tanween etc etc. And I know she would eventually read through practice and I realized that I need to be consistent and use the same method I used to do with her when she was young which is to read to her all the rules everyday instead of asking her to repeat and she will eventually be familiar and will start reading fast Insha Allaah! In other words I got to drill things into her!!!

I use the Iqra books for reading but I find it is a bit confusing for Maimoonah as her learning style is slightly different and the method of introducing rules in the Iqra book is not making her remember what she has studied. So I was thinking of using something organized according to her learning style.

Alhamdulillaah while searching how I could do this , our dear sister Umm Ibraheem had this post and this one and it just gave me the guideline I needed.

So this is what I did. I got these sheets from Gateway To Arabic Book 1. Since I already had this printed out I used them but if you need you can also download some of them here Insha Allaah! So I got the following Reading sheets.
  • Different Forms of Letters
  • Fatha
  • Kasrah
  • Dhammah
  • Fathatain
  • Kasratain
  • Dhammatain
  • Long Vowels (Fatha, Kasrah, Dhammah)
  • Shaddah
  • Sukoon (I have not added this as I could not find the sheet but I write and read to her)
Insha Allaah I hope to include sun letters and the moon letters later along with Naughty letters!

I have filed all these sheets in the Arabic File Folder and I read it to her everyday either before we start our lessons or in the evening when we are relaxing.

As I mentioned on my summary post I also intend to use some Unit Studies from http://tjarabicstudies.blogspot.com/ . These unit studies are good for practising reading and writing and will make the kids read and write with interest Insha Allaah! As each week there something new to look forward to.

We are continuing with Qur'aan Centre Activities and Maimoonah is progressing well that way as she is good in remembering sight words. I also make her read each word even though she prefers to read from her memory!!!

I still continue with Iqra Books and  Madeenah Arabic Readers as an when we need. Insha Allaah I hope this would make things easy for us! How do you teach your kids to read and make a steady progress? Please do share so that all can benefit!

As'salaamu alaykee uhkti, I really enjoy reading your blog on how you educate your daugher. With my children I can get them to memorize by repetition. This seems to work and has been for a while masha'Allaah. Also, I have created a program called the Mastery Program in which I work with them until they get it.I only do one program/subject at a time for example we may work on Reading/Writing/Spellling for a month or two inshaa'Allaah however long it takes them to master the work. You can find some of their work inshaa'Allaah on our blog www.ummiloves2teach.blogspot.com You are doing a great job alhamdulillah.
